At what point is it possible to find something funny in something tragic? There is a mysterious number somewhere in the vast universe that dictates when we as an audience can finally look at a horrible event or group of people in our history and laugh at it. It is only the greatest satirists in the world that have mastered this mystifying timeline and, after watching the film Four Lions, it is obvious that Chris Morris qualifies.

Morris' debut film is a comedy about the loveable bunch known as Islamic suicide bombers. Five British-Pakistani men are trying to do right in the eyes of their God by killing themselves with an explosive whilst in a populated area. The only problem is that the collective IQ of the group hovers somewhere between the square root of pi and Verne Troyer's shoe size. There's Waj Kayvan Novak, a man so dumb he has to photograph himself to determine whether or not he is confused; Barry Nigel Lindsay, who thinks the best way to send a message to Al Qaeda's enemies is by bombing a mosque; Hassan Arsher Ali, who delivers his terrorist message in rap lyrics; and Fessal Adeel Akhtar, who wears a box over his head while on video because he doesn't want to "show an image." Leading the pack is Omar Riz Ahmed, the Moe in charge of his group of stooges, who just wants to do right by his wife and son. Together they try and figure out the perfect location to spread their message, but whether it's God or fate, something seems to be standing in their way.

As great as the performence were, what truly makes this movie magnificent is its script. Written by Morris as well as Jesse Armstrong, Sam Bain and Simon Blackwell, hardly a minute goes by when you aren't risking suffocation from laughing so much. More than just the characters, who are simply brilliant, it's the situations in which the group finds themselves that are a real scream. The scenes where Omar is talking with his family, be it putting his son to bed with his own special version of the Lion King or expressing to his wife how upset he is with the mission's progress, are genius, playing on every sappy darama about "keeping the family together" that has come out over the last hundred years. And while I can't divulge too many details without providing spoilers, I want you to imagine four terrorists running around the streets of London as an upside-down clown, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, an ostrich rider and a honey monster.

But satire doesn't exist just to make you laugh; it's also there to make you think and Morris doesn't hold back in this department and is an equal opportunity offender. As bad as the Islamic characters in this film are presented, the British police come off just as bad, more often than not making truly horrendous mistakes in their efforts to apprehend the terror suspects. Commenting on racial profiling and rendition techniques, the film's main focus may be the five mujahideen, but security forces get their fair share of criticism.

Last, but by no means least, comes Takers. For a picture opening on the final weekend of August – traditionally a dumping ground for inferior product – it's surprisingly ambitious. It lures us in by promising a stylish, witty caper flick à la Oceans Eleven or The Italian Job, then suddenly gets serious and – OMG – starts developing its characters. Soon it becomes clear that director John Luessenhop is aiming to give us a smart crime drama in the manner of Michael Mann's Heat. By the end, his reach has exceeded his grasp, but he gets full marks for trying.

The Takers themselves are ambitious dudes. They're a super-sophisticated team of bank robbers who pull off huge, complex heists and live large on their takings (with 10 per cent donated to charity – seems they've got a Robin Hood streak). They dress sharp, drive top-of-the-line wheels and plot their grand thefts over champagne and single-malt scotch, either in their own posh nightclub or the penthouse aerie of their ringleader, Gordon Cozier (Idris Elba). Heck, Cozier even has a British accent – how classy is that?

The guys have just finished pulling off a daring daylight robbery of a Cal Fed bank in downtown L.A. – hijacking a TV news chopper to make their escape – when they're handed a juicy new opportunity. Their old teammate Ghost (rapper T.I.), fresh from a stint in prison, rejoins them with a plan for an armoured-car heist that promises a haul big enough for them all to retire on. The catch: it has to be executed in a mere five days.

It's the old one-last-job scenario, and the Takers, apparently unaware of the perils of that timeless Hollywood cliché, jump right in. They've also got another movie cliché, a tenacious cop, on their trail. Jack Welles (Matt Dillon, sounding like he smokes a pack of Marlboros for breakfast) is out to get them, at the expense of his crumbling personal life. Split from his wife, he has weekend custody of his young daughter (Isa Briones), but spends their precious quality time together in pursuit of Cozier.

The Takers have their own personal issues to deal with. Cozier's older sister, Naomi (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), is a crack addict who checks herself out of rehab and back into his life just as he's overseeing the armoured-car job. Then there's the tension between Ghost and fellow crewmember Jake (Michael Ealy), who has just proposed marriage to Lilli (Zoe Saldana), Ghost's former girlfriend.

Luessenhop, whose only previous feature was the 2000 prison drama Lockdown, sets himself a tricky task. He has to balance the demands of a convoluted caper plot with his noble efforts to craft a compelling character drama. The heist scheme itself, which involves blowing a hole in the middle of a traffic intersection, is pretty ludicrous. The movie doesn't focus too closely on it and it's just as well, since it doesn't bear scrutiny. The characters get more of the director's attention. Luessenhop manages to spotlight all six of the Takers, while giving equal time not only to the dogged Welles, but also to a tragic subplot involving Welles's financially strapped partner (Jay Hernandez).

However, the screenplay (by Luessenhop, Peter Allen, Gabriel Casseus and Avery Duff) doesn't give us the expected Heat-like confrontation between Cozier and Welles. Too bad. Elba and Dillon may not be Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, but they're both intense actors who could spark off each other. Instead, Cozier is reduced to trading pithy observations with the team's bland sharpshooter (Paul Walker, from the Fast and the Furious franchise).

The most entertaining of the Takers, however, is T.I.'s swaggering Ghost – not least because he gets the lion's share of the wisecracks. The cast's other recording artist, R&B singer Chris Brown, is short-changed in the dialogue department, but he's compensated with a terrifically choreographed chase. As Jesse, Jake's fleet-footed kid brother, Brown eludes the cops by leaping across moving car roofs like stepping-stones and barrelling through the busy corridors of an office building. Feverishly edited by Armen Minasian, the sequence is one long, wild adrenalin rush.

The other action scenes don't measure up to it, but again Luessenhop shows ambition. He even takes a stab at some old-school lyrical violence with a shootout in a suite of the elegant Roosevelt Hotel – a slow-motion ballet of falling bodies and floating pillow feathers scored to sobbing violins. Peckinpah and Penn it ain't, but at least he's been studying the masters.

Unfortunately, he's also studied every blessed action-movie trope. We get the Takers coolly walking away from an explosion – and later, walking toward us in slo-mo like Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. Hayden Christensen, as the team's jazz-piano-playing pretty boy, goes flying across the screen, both guns blazing. There's even a classic Mexican standoff. After the merciless parodies of Hot Fuzz and The Other Guys, it's impossible to watch this stuff with a straight face.

If Takers took less from other films of its ilk and relied more on its own considerable resources, it would stand a better chance of being the superior crime thriller it obviously aspires to be.

The action/thriller film Takers is, plain and simple, the kind of movie you should go and watch if you have nothing better to do and are looking for an OK combination of cheap laughs and overly dramatic sequences.

Making up the roster of thieves are Hayden Christensen, Paul Walker, Idris Elba, Michael Ealy, rapper T.I. and R&B artist Chris Brown.  Essentially a ‘taker' is, as described very directly in the movie, someone who takes things for a living.

The plot is simple:  After the takers take a lot of money from a bank, they say they're done.  Then T.I., who used to be a taker gets out of prison and tries to convince his old taker pals that they should take some more.  Despite their rule of only taking once a year, they're quickly swayed to believe their vindictive friend has got their backs still.

I think that the entire movie can be simplified to one moment, when it's mentioned that the crew is going to take down an armored truck like in The Italian Job.  The only problem is that The Italian Job actually does an adequate job of fulfilling what action fans want, where as Takers seems to fall a little flat.

The way the movie is constructed disengages audiences from the story; instead of sticking to the main heist that is planned and carried out, there are so many different stories occurring that it's really hard to follow—and it doesn't come together well in the end, the end just sort of happens.

There multiple subplots are so unnecessary, and subsequently they're hard to take seriously.  They range from the marital problems of the poorly characterized protagonist cop, Matt Dillon, as well as his partner's struggles with his son's serious illness all the way to the rehab that one of the takers' sisters is going through.  There is just so much going on that you begin to ask yourself, "whaaaaat?"

Now, it's not that Takers doesn't attempt to portray a quality, action-filled crime story; the problem is that it tries a little too hard.  Sitting in the theatre, the parts of the movie that were obviously intended to be dramatic were received with huge bouts of laughter from the audience.

Despite it having all of the components of a great action movie—Guns, private rooftop and balcony talks, chases, planes, money, and quirky Russians who love vodka—Takers falls a little short and definitely won't be the best movie you see this summer.

The Wire really ruined things for cops-and-robbers cinema. Back in the '80s, Hollywood could still make a movie like Takers,  counting on some audiences to buy into its slick, quasi-operatic take on suave, sexy criminals and the gruff, hard-boiled officers obsessed with bringing them down. Now audiences are savvy enough to realize that extended shootouts on crowded city streets aren't really a typical day of police work.

Of course, The Wire wasn't the only cop show in the past decade to debunk the '80s glamorization of police and thieves, but it's relevant here because Takers features two cast members from that show — Idris Elba in the lead, plus Glynn Turman in a smaller role — and they're constant reminders of just what kind of crime fiction this isn't.

Elba plays (as he did on television) a cool, calculating criminal, in this case the leader of a crew of heist artists possessed of a creativity and a surgical precision that would make the Ocean's 11 gang envious. And as a heist picture, Takers doesn't stray far from formula. Ghost (rapper T.I.) gets out of jail the day after his former crew hits a bank for more than $2 million and comes to them for money they owe him from years before — and to lay in their lap the promise of an even bigger score. It's not quite the "one last job" typical of the genre, but it fits the mold.

They're being tracked by the standard-issue obsessive cop, a hardened lawman who lives and breathes the job, so oblivious to life outside his work that he spends his day off trailing a suspect with his daughter in tow. Matt Dillon phones in the role, seemingly hoping that a raspy tough-guy growl will suggest a depth of character lacking in the script.

He's not alone. Director John Luessenhop doesn't challenge anyone in the cast to do much acting; Elba does what he can with the material, but the worst of the bunch — Paul Walker and Hayden Christensen, wooden performers even on many of their best days — seem like they're reading lines for the first time.

That's problematic for the film's emotional subplots, of which there are far too many. Personal dramas away from the heist are an essential part of these movies: They provide the distractions that make for sloppy execution and the potential for disaster, and they create an otherwise unlikely rooting interest in unsavory crooks. Luessenhop and his three co-writers hedge their bets by giving many of their characters half-baked personal crises, but with no heft to the performances, it's hard to care whether anyone's dreams are dashed or fulfilled.

That leaves the heist itself to compensate, but it only digs deeper into action movie cliches. There's the obligatory chase sequence, a frenetically edited shaky-cam set piece in which beleaguered singer Chris Brown gets to sprint across the tops of cars. There are double-crosses, point-blank shootouts between warring criminals, and a Mexican standoff. And, just in case you haven't had enough of that hoariest of shoot-'em-up images, one character even fires a gun while diving sideways. In slow motion. While soulful, swelling strings underline the poignancy of the gunplay.

Takers might have been cutting edge in 1985. But in 2010, after these images have been endlessly spoofed and rendered obsolete by more sophisticated takes on the material, it's little more than a humorless throwback that was never let in on the joke.

Back in April, movie audiences flocked to The Backup Plan, an unbearable romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez about an independent, career-driven forty-something woman who elects to have a child through artificial insemination by an anonymous donor. Now, a mere four months later, cineplexes across the country will welcome another artificial-insemination-focused romantic comedy staring an actress named Jennifer: The Switch.

Jennifer Aniston plays Kassie, a single New Yorker who decides she wants a baby and isn't going to wait for a man to come around and make it happen. Despite objections from her male best friend, Wally (Jason Bateman), she decides to become pregnant through artificial insemination. To add an extra wrinkle in her already unconventional plans, Kassie elects not to use an anonymous donor, but to find someone she could get to know personally before using his…sample.

Wally, who has always secretly had romantic feelings towards Kassie, becomes jealous when she declines his offer to father the child and instead chooses Roland (Patrick Wilson), whom she met by placing an ad. At Kassie's "insemination party," a depressed Wally stumbles upon Roland's donation and, in a moment of drunken stupor, switches it for his own.

Shortly after the party, Kassie moves away and the two lose touch – until she moves back to New York seven years later. During their first reunion, Kassie introduces Wally to her son Sebastian (Thomas Robinson). During their meeting, Wally – who had completely blacked out the night he made "the switch" – notices some startling similarities between the child and himself. Knowing it will destroy any potential for a future romantic relationship with Kassie, he keeps his discovery a secret.

Lucky for audiences, The Switch focuses a large portion of its attention not on heavily advertised headliner Aniston, but instead on her far more likable costar Jason Bateman. After the film's almost entirely expository first act, many scenes exclusively feature Bateman's character, Wally, getting to know the son he never knew he had. Thomas Robinson is adorable as dorky six-year-old Sebastian and Bateman charms as a dad-in-training.

Of course, this quietly original and unexpected element couldn't be left to carry the film. The plot just had to come back to Wally's feelings for Kassie, who oblivious to the truth, is now dating would-be donor, Roland. Wally's struggle with his secret and his hopes to win Kassie's affection become the film's main focus.

The plot completely devolves into the clichéd gotta-get-the-girl story we've all seen a thousand times. Viewers are battered with the same unoriginal jokes and inhuman dialogue that seem to plague every romantic comedy that's been released this year. A 90-minute dervish of bikinis, breasts and blood, director Alexandre Aja's movie is gleefully, hedonistically salacious and shamelessly gory.

Set among the crystal waters of fictional Lake Victoria during spring break, Piranha 3D is remarkably like Fast And Furious with fish. As thousands of young beach bodies descend on the lake for a seemingly endless party of alcohol and pounding, awful music, an earth tremor disgorges scores of prehistoric flesh-eating critters from their aquatic tomb.

Elisabeth Shue and the mighty Ving Rhames star as Julie and Fallon, two law enforcers charged with the hopeless task of keeping order among the gathering throng of teenagers, while Steven McQueen (grandson of the legendary Steve) plays Julie's son Jake, who sneaks off to have some fun on porn baron Derrick's (Jerry O'Connell) yacht when he should be babysitting his horribly bratty younger siblings.

Richard Dreyfuss starts the movie on a high note, as he appears in a brief cameo as an older version of his Jaws character Hooper, and even manages to drunkenly burble Show Me The Way To Go Home before he's mercilessly torn to shreds by CG fish.

For what is surely the first hour, Aja bides his time, treating the audience to a continuous parade of bare, mostly female flesh before he finally brings on the killer fish. Kelly Brook and Riley Steele play a pair of buxom starlets whose task it is to pass the time until the screaming starts, and spend a lengthy period cavorting naked under water to the strains of Léo Delibes' The Flower Duet.

Eventually, the blood flows in torrents. In a sustained attack on a beach party, the piranhas – presumably sick of the pounding music – tuck into the waiting horde of cellulite-free revellers with gusto. Eyeballs are  nibbled out of sockets, muscle-bound beach hunks are eviscerated, and one unfortunate teen has her entire face pulled off by a boat's outboard motor.

Between the bloodshed, Christopher Lloyd makes a welcome appearance to give a vague scientific explanation for everything that's happening, and there's even a brief cameo from Eli Roth, whose head is crushed between two boats like ripe fruit.

In fact, Piranha 3D boasts a far better cast than a film of its calibre deserves. Frustratingly, Ving Rhames and Elisabeth Shue are barely used, and their attempts to save Lake Victoria's nibbled swimmers is secondary to the fate of Steven McQueen's dull character and his equally vapid love interest, Kelly, played by Jessica Szohr. The rest of the cast, broadly speaking, is little more than fish food.

Quite possibly the bloodiest mainstream picture to appear this summer, Piranha 3D's fountains of gore and prosthetic limbs would be of more consequence if the film were even the slightest bit scary.

Even Aja appears to be unsure whether to direct the film as a straight horror or as camp fluff – the lengthy build-up hints at the former, while the buoyant breasts and messy deaths point decisively to the latter.

The use of 3D, on the other hand, is far more successful than you might expect from a post-production conversion, with plenty of eyeballs and gnashing teeth flying out of the screen at all times.

But after the beach party massacre leaves Lake Victoria a crimson slick of bobbing corpses and weeping, chewed survivors, Piranha 3D's plot sinks never to resurface. Having apparently thrown all his creativity into the extended dining scene we've just witnessed, Aja appears to be directorially spent, leaving the film to drift to a predictable climax that recalls the tedious conclusion of Jaws II.

For connoisseurs of gore, Piranha 3D's trashy combination of titillation and comic evisceration will make for an entertaining night out at the movies – if the idea of a CG fish puking up a half-chewed penis directly into the screen sounds like a funny gag, this is probably the film you've been waiting all summer to see.

For everyone else, Aja's aquatic horror will prove a predictable, if mercifully brief, bore with jaws.

Scott (Michael Cera) is a layabout bassist with Toronto garage rockers Sex Bob-omb.

He's smugly dating a schoolgirl called Knives Chau (movie newcomer Ellen Wong, excellent) and lives with his catty pal Wallace Wells (Kieran Culkin, excellent too).

But then he falls for colourfully-haired hipster chick Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). And in order to date her, he needs to defeat her seven evil exes in a series of hyped-up, arcade-style brawls.

The plot starts slowly, but finally gets up to speed in Scott's fight against Ramona's first ex, the Bollywood-dancing, fireball-hurling Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha).

It's five minutes of pure geek bliss. Anyone who's waggled a Street Fighter arcade stick will get an almighty tornado-whirlwind-kick out of the battle, with its mid-air combo punching and excitable computer voiceover.

But that...is about it. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World has played its hand. And there are still six more exes and five more battles to go.

From that point on, Scott Pilgrim gives you precious little else to get excited about. The characters are paper-thin, unrelatable irritants. The plot's repetitive in the extreme. There is no trace, anywhere, of a soul.

None of which is helped by the presence of the enragingly miscast Michael 'Me Again' Cera.

A man who can only play one role in the first place: Michael Cera.

So when he's required to bring something else to the table - as he is here - the table's as empty as a wedding buffet five minutes after Eammon Holmes shows up.
